NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR - MAY 2024

It’s summertime, and if you are my kid, all you talk about is “going swimming”.  Her dad, to appease her, made a comment about someday digging a pool out in the backyard.  The thought of my husband attempting this conjured up images of Tom Hanks in the movie “The Money Pit”.

My dearest husband, you cannot just dig out a pool in the backyard.  First, you need a building permit.  Also, did you know there is something called the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC)?  I didn’t – but the construction of your pool needs to comply with it.  You need a location plan or survey to make sure that (a) the pool is, in fact, on your property (you have no idea how many times this has been an issue), and (b) it’s not encroaching into anything it shouldn’t.  If you have a septic system, make sure you call the Health Department because they need to be okay with it.  Oh, and finally, you need a five-foot tall fence.  At some point, someone is going to tell you that you only need a four-foot tall fence, but Woodstock City Code requires a five-foot tall fence.  Write that down.

Don’t believe me – call the folks in the Building Division at 770-592-6000.

Have a great summer.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The Community Development Department is responsible for managing the current and long-term growth of the city through the administration of the Land Development Ordinance and the Woodstock Comprehensive Plan.  We provide a wide variety of services to the public - administering the public hearing process for land development, preserving residential neighborhoods, issuing business licenses, collecting business taxes, evaluating requests for tree removal, issuing PTV permits, and reviewing building and safety plans. Let’s go build something together.
